Bacteria and virus removal with 0.01 micron membrane
Although this technology has larger pores than RO, it is extremely effective in terms of microbiological safety. Water is pumped under low pressure (1-3 bar) to hollow fiber or spiral wound membranes. Membrane pores allow only water and low molecular weight dissolved substances to pass.
This way, bacteria are removed 100%, viruses 99.99%+, colloids 100% and macromolecules 95-100%. UF membranes are made from PES (Polyethersulfone), PVDF (Polyvinylidene Fluoride) or PAN materials and are typically used in hollow fiber configuration. These membranes require lower pressure than RO and consume less energy. UF systems are cleaned with automatic backwash, CIP (Clean-in-Place) chemical cleaning and forward flush continuous cross flow.
Thanks to these maintenance operations, membrane life can be 5-10 years. UF technology provides microbiological safety without the need for chemical disinfectants and offers low operating costs.
