Ion Exchange (Water Softening)

Removal of hardness ions with cation resin

This technology was developed in the early 20th century and forms the basis of water softening processes today.

In water softening, Ca²⁺ (calcium) and Mg²⁺ (magnesium) ions that cause hardness are exchanged with Na⁺ (sodium) ions on the cation exchange resin. As a result of this process, hard water is converted to soft water and scaling problems are eliminated. When resin capacity is exhausted, regeneration is performed with NaCl (salt) solution.

In this process, calcium goes as waste, resin returns to Na⁺ form and the system is ready to work again. In modern systems, this regeneration process occurs completely automatically. Ion exchange technology prevents scaling of pipes and heaters, increases energy efficiency by 25-30%, reduces soap and detergent consumption by 50% and extends equipment life. These advantages provide both economic and environmental benefits.
