Catalytic Oxidation

Iron, manganese and arsenic removal with special minerals

This technology has been developed for the removal of these elements that are common in well waters.

Dissolved iron (ferrous - Fe²⁺) is oxidized on catalytic surface to form ferric hydroxide (brown particle) and is retained in filter bed. Similarly, dissolved manganese (Mn²⁺) is oxidized to form black MnO₂ particle. Arsenic is first oxidized from As(III) to As(V), then co-precipitates with iron hydroxide.

Catalytic minerals include Manganese Greensand (most common), Birm (no chemicals required), Pyrolox (long-lasting) and MTM (special for arsenic removal). These minerals are optimized for different applications and offer different advantages. With this technology, iron is reduced from 5 ppm to 0.2 ppm, manganese from 5 ppm to 0.05 ppm, and arsenic from 50 µg/L to 10 µg/L. System requirements include minimum 15% dissolved oxygen, pH range 6.8-9.0 and adequate alkalinity.

This technology offers environmentally friendly solutions without requiring chemical dosing and provides economical operation with 5-10 year media life.
