Activated Carbon Filtration

Organic matter, odor and chlorine removal through adsorption

Thanks to its very large surface area (1 gram activated carbon = 500-1500 m² surface area), it has superior adsorption capacity.

This material is produced by controlled burning and activation of organic materials such as coal, coconut shell or wood. The working principle of activated carbon is called adsorption. Dissolved organic molecules, chlorine, odor and taste-causing substances in water adhere to the porous surface of activated carbon and are removed from water.

This is a physical/chemical retention process and occurs with Van der Waals forces. Types of activated carbon include GAC (Granular Activated Carbon), Powder Activated Carbon and Extruded Activated Carbon. GAC is the most commonly used type and is used in bed-type filters. Powder Activated Carbon is used in dosing systems and Extruded Activated Carbon is preferred for special applications.

This technology provides 100% chlorine and chloramine removal, removal of organic chemicals (pesticides, herbicides), removal of odor and taste-causing substances, removal of organic color, and removal of THM and other disinfection by-products. When activated carbon capacity is exhausted, it should be replaced or thermally reactivated. Lifetime is typically 12-24 months.
